Jane Philips

Jane Philips makes “big paintings because I have big feelings.” For the artist, the physical act of painting is a crucial tool to processing and channeling internal and external stimuli that can, at times, be overwhelming. On her canvas and paper surfaces she is able to “scrape, splash, erase, and carve,” building her spaces through repeated additions and subtractions. Grasses and plant-life feature prominently in her imagery, a metaphor for her tangling and twisting emotions and a tribute to the peace she finds in nature, away from the tumult of humanity.

Philips earned a MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. An early career artist, she has exhibited at Art Basel Miami, in galleries around New York City, and in Alabama, including at the Huntsville Museum of Art and the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur. Since graduating in 2023, she has taught art at the New York Academy of Art and West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Maryland.

Philips resides in Brooklyn, New York.
